A licence, an assignment and a distribution arrangement are three different things. Ask what the agreement actually permits and what stays under your own control, rather than relying on a general reassurance that you “keep your rights.”

Distribution describes how your book can be supplied or made available through particular channels. On its own, it does not prove that any specific shop will stock your title or that copies will sell. Ask for the exact channels named in your agreement, including any geographic or format limits, and be wary of any wording that implies guaranteed bookstore placement, reviews or media coverage without clear, specific support behind it.

In Ireland, ISBNs are usually bought in blocks and assigned to a specific imprint, which is why it matters who controls that imprint under your agreement. An ISBN identifies an edition of your book; it does not, by itself, guarantee that any particular retailer will carry it. Before you agree to anything, ask directly who registers your ISBN, whose imprint it sits under, and whether that arrangement continues if you later decide to work with someone else.
